Actually, this news may not be quite as hot-off-the-presses as my attention-grabbing headline suggests. This afternoon I swung by the Play Circle Theater at Memorial Union to see if WUD Film had announced any of its schedule for the Fall semester, and indeed it had. Kind of.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek (2009) revival will be playing on September 18th and 19th, with screenings at 7:00PM and 9:30PM on both nights. No complaints here.

The “midnight movie” on the 19th will be Shaun of the Dead (2004). I put “midnight movie” in scare quotes because WUD Film has once again proved that it has absolutely no clue what truly constitutes a “midnight movie.” If WUD Film really thinks that the folks who are actually going to attend the midnight screening will dig Shaun of the Dead, just imagine what that same audience would make of something like Jodorowsky’s El Topo (1970). Unfortunately, I’m sure I’ll have more to say about this as the semester progresses.
