‘Sin Nombre’ coming to the Memorial Union

Credit is due, as they say, where credit is due: on September 25th & 26th WUD Film will be showing two very different and very recent international films in the Play Circle Theater at Memorial Union.

At 7:00PM on both nights they’ll be screening Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre (2009), which was very well-received when it was released earlier this year. This Spanish-language film confronts clandestine immigration and gang violence, among other subjects, with seriousness and with a willingness to show even the most horrifying images associated with these social phenomena. Major kudos to WUD Film for bringing such an ostensibly interesting work of art (or is it a newsreel?) to campus. For good measure, here’s a link to the film’s trailer.

Sin Nombre will be followed on both nights at 9:30PM by a contemporary Thai martial arts film, 2008’s Chocolate. Can’t say that I’ll be checking this one out, but the one-sentence plot description on IMDB is worth relating: “An autistic woman with powerful martial art skills looks to settle her ailing mother’s debts by seeking out the ruthless gangs that owe her family money.” If that sounds like it might be up your alley, you’ll probably want to be at the Play Circle on either Friday or Saturday night.
