The Withdrawn Image

Unlike buildings, paintings, sculptures, works of literature, installations or photographs, films don’t sit still and await interrogation by the viewer.

Films resist, that is to say, they run away.

For a critic to be worth a damn she must remember that films are always on-the-go, always running away, always withdrawing.

But where are they going?

It’s not a matter of possessing the image; it’s a matter of knowing where it goes and what it does once it gets there.
